Wallpaper

I can't stand it. We just moved in, and the wallpaper is hideous. Where was this disaster when we initially looked at this place? All I remember was the spectacular view, the airy lightness of the rooms. I certainly did not remember three different, and clashing, kinds of wallpaper in the master bedroom alone.

There's no chance of redecorating for at least two years. Every penny we've got is going into other, more immediate necessities. So night after night, I fall asleep with this wallpaper burned into my brain. The bottom of it is green and white vertical stripes. You know, the kind that are supposed to be slimming. The green is a dark, hunter green and it has been put down with such care and precision that it's hard to tell where the electrical outlets are, since they've been covered in the same stuff. Next, a strip of dark green (yes, that same hunter green) with chrysanthemums, gladioli and dahlias on it. Different muted shades of gold and peach. Kind of soothing, really. And above it is yet another paper in a shimmering sort of pattern that reminds me of those foil Kleenex boxes. When I was a kid, I always had one on my desk. My second grade teacher called it "clinics" and I never knew what she was talking about.

I could understand any one of them on their own. But...all three. We didn't get to meet the people who lived here before us. I don't know, other than gun nuts, who they were.

I have some spare paint in the garage, if you want it. Or ask on Freecycle.org; I'll bet you could find someone willing to get rid of some paint, and I can loan you dropcloths and paintbrushes and such.

It might not be in a great color, but at least it wouldn't be three patterns of wallpaper in one room.

I wonder what tacking sheets to the walls would look like? (I'm not exactly suggesting because I've never done it and it might be awful, just thinking.)

Do your walls look slim?

You can take off wallpaper with relative ease by sponging it with hot water, letting it sit, and then scraping it. It's tedious and time-consuming, but free. And if you ask around, you will no doubt find a whole fuckload of people who have spare paint in the garage. Most of the paint will be white or off-white, too, so you can just mix it all together and have a really boring inoffensive color. :)
