Urban Surreal

Today is one of those hazy days that gives the air a flat, shimmery quality that certain writers prize about Los Angeles. I realized that it made the Silicon Valley landscape look like my dreams where I can never see all the way to the horizon, only a few buildings away and even at that distance, things lose their distinctness.

I was driving down 880 on my way home and there was a billboard for a discount casket company. The picture on the billboard showed a huge, ornate black casket with white satin lining topped by a gigantic spray of red roses and baby's breath. I looked all over the sign, desperately wanting to see the disclaimer written next to the picture on every box of corn flakes or bag of frozen peas.

I really wanted it to say "serving suggestion."
