Hee hee!

One of the engineers is doing a few air flow studies and has a quantity of dry ice. He gave me a half-inch cube and I put it in my mug of tea. The tea is now stone cold and unfit to drink, but wicked cool-looking anyway.

You know it's not just unfit to drink, it's poisonous, right?

When I was in elementary school my grandparents sent us some steaks packed in dry ice. Wicked cool.

Poisonous as soda pop
It's only CO2, after all. Don't go inhaling it straight, but that's all.

My apologies - I must have been confusing it with something else.

See? I told you I'm only a Wannabe Geek. *sigh*

Well, a piece that big is enough to give you a nasty burn if you're silly enough to hold onto it long enough, and the Pirate's right - don't put the cup (one of those nice cobalt-glass ones) right up to your nose and take a big inhale.

I risk exposing my deeply geeky childhood by admitting this, but when I was a kid, they sold dry ice at the Baskin Robbins and my brother and I would pool our allowance money and get a lump to put into our homemade cloud chamber. Ours wasn't quite this complicated, and I know that my brother used something he ordered from Edmund Scientifics for the radioactive component.

Yeah, when your mother bursts into the dark bathroom where you and your brother can be heard whispering and giggling and finds you watching vapor trails agaist the black felt of the cloud chamber on the bathroom counter, you know you're living in a deeply geeky household.

Whoaaaa. Now that's some serious Geek cred.

Seriously. It's why I love her. Man, all I did when I was a kid was perform flammability and conductivity tests (I set stuff on fire and ran electricity through things). I didn't even dream of playing with radioactivity.

Hee. That would be quite amuzing.
