Merde du jour

The Pirate and I drove in together today and ended up behind a Mercedes with a license plate that read "SMENNA."

We decided that "smenna" is an Eastern European spread that people put on toast, similar to Vegemite, but even more unspeakable. It's made out of fermented mashed fish, vinegar and huge quantities of salt - what anchovy paste would be if the anchovies were not cooked, but were instead left to go soft on their own.

Smenna is a wonderful addition to turnip stew, bringing out the flavor of late-season turnips in a way that no amount of kerosene ever could. It's also great in salads, allowing for a sort of "wilted" salad without the need of hot bacon grease. A dash of smenna in a shot of vodka is customarily called a "mule twitch," and is popular on Saturday nights with farmers, mechanics and the local constabulary.
