PSA - Always Leave Your Phone Number!!

On Monday morning, I came in to work and found that I had an unusual number of voicemails. I thought it was because there had been a problem with one of my mailings on Friday, but that wasn't it.

Three of the calls were a woman trying to reach Lydia to tell her that her aunt was in the hospital, and that Lydia would be needed on Wednesday once the aunt was out to help care for her. The caller sounded more desperate with each call, begging Lydia to call her at Carolyn's house.

It was painful to hear, because I don't know anyone named Lydia and the caller didn't leave a phone number. If she had, I would have been able to call her immediately and tell her "You've got the wrong number! This isn't Lydia" and she could have found Lydia sooner. As it was, I just got off the phone with her. She sounded very upset when I answered the phone and I told her that I had gotten her messages but couldn't call her because she hadn't left a number.

Whenever you leave a message on someone's voicemail or answering machine, leave your number. It's only another second or two, and it could make all the difference.

I just got another call from the same woman. She has dialed my work number so many times now that she's memorized it instead of the real number. While I was on the phone with her, she looked up the number and realized that the exchange she *should* have been calling was 994, while my exchange is 944.

The good thing about this is that I feel like I know this woman now, and I can call Lydia and tell her that someone is looking for her.
