Bad crap

You know, the Buddha says that just because you have gained enlightenment does not mean that you stop suffering. The same is true no matter what good thing happens in your life. I finished my novel. My sister came to visit. These are good things.

And then, this morning at work, the drive that holds 10 Gb worth of the files I've been working on for the better part of a year failed. Click. Click. Click. Like it had its little turn signal on. My hope is that I can recover that data quickly. If not, things get ugly, complicated and expensive.

This is not the end of the world. I told my boss and he neither yelled nor threw things. He didn't even stop smiling. It's just so frustrating. The real irony is that YESTERDAY, I asked our IT dept. if there was somewhere on the network I could back these files up because my computer was due to be migrated to XP. If they had just gotten back to me yesterday, this would have been a nonissue. Grrrrrr.

If your IT folks are total lamers and don't have drive diagnostic tools, I do have an industrial grade drive tester/validator/repairer. I used it to recover about half of my laptop hard drive when it took on the click of death. Might still have another program somewhere that you can run from a boot floppy to reconstruct a failed drive.

First, let me say this: our IT guys having drive diagnostic tools does not preclude them being total lamers. I walked into the cave where the desktop machine migration was being performed and asked someone whether they were able to recover anything, and our guy said that nothing they've tried so far has worked, so they're bringing THEIR stuff from home (all geeks seem to have much cooler stuff at home than they ever have at work). I'm betting that it will be Thursday before they throw up their hands.

I'll let you know if I need your stuff, and if I do, I will owe you BIG.

Agreed on the mutually exclusive thing.

I'll plan to throw the drive tester in the car on Thursday. We can chat more later.
