STFU Already!

I have seen more bitchy posts about Valentine's Day than I can shake a mouse at, and I'm sick of them. If you guys spent half the time reading a book or going for a walk or cooking a nice meal that you spend bitching about being inundated with Valentine's Day propaganda, you wouldn't even NOTICE Valentine's Day.

For pity's sake, you'd think you people aren't in control of your own brains. Hallmark tells you that you should buy a card and you freak out because you don't have anyone to give it to. Do you feel the same kind of panic when Secretary's Day rolls around and you don't have one of those either? Do you obsess about that for weeks beforehand and go around moaning and grousing all day because you're being bombarded with Secretary's Day propaganda but, once again, you're Sad and Secretary-less? Do you cry yourself to sleep on Arbor Day because you live in an apartment and can't plant a tree in your yard?

I'm Buddhist. For the entire lives of my children, the older one of whom is 15, I have been inundated with propaganda that says "If you don't go into debt buying your children a Nintendo Wii, YOU SUCK." And I'll admit, I do give in to a certain extent. Every year, we buy a tiny little rosemary tree with the intent of planting it outside at the end of the season and having fresh rosemary all spring (and it invariably dies by early January) and we decorate it with strings of popcorn and cranberries which we feed to the chickens on January second. I give my children gifts and I send cards, but mostly, I just groove on seeing happy people being nice to each other. I happen to like the "Christmas spirit," even if that's not what I would call it. I'd call it people acting a little more Buddhist. I don't spend all my time BITCHING about how I'm being guilted into being nice to people because of this totally artificial holiday (and what are the non-artificial holidays? solstice?).

On Valentine's Day, don't think about the Eros that you're missing out on. There are so many other kinds of love that you could be thinking about! How about some Filias? Call your parents and tell them that you love them! How about Agape? Tell your friends how great you think they are! Some Caritas would be nice. Cut the human race some slack and assume that not everyone is out to make you miserable.
